What Is Class 2 Base, and When Do You Actually Need It?

Class 2 aggregate base shows up on almost every set of California site plans. It is less a product and more a recipe: a graded blend of rock that compacts into a hard, load-bearing layer.

A graded blend, not just gravel

Class 2 runs from about 3/4 inch down to fines. The big rock carries load, the fines fill the gaps, and the whole mix keys together under a compactor. That gradation is what separates real base from loose gravel.

Where it belongs

Use Class 2 under driveways, slabs, building pads, parking lots and roads. Anywhere a paved or finished surface needs a firm, even foundation that drains and stays put.

Virgin or recycled

We carry both virgin Class 2 baserock and recycled base that meets Class II strength. When the spec demands virgin, use it; otherwise recycled gives you the same performance for less.
