Ordering too little means a second delivery; ordering too much means a pile you have to move. A two-minute estimate gets you close.
The simple formula
Multiply length by width in feet, then by your depth in feet (inches divided by 12). Divide by 27 to get cubic yards. For most aggregate base, multiply cubic yards by about 1.4 to get tons. Example: a 40 by 20 pad at 4 inches deep is about 9.9 cubic yards, or roughly 14 tons.
Depth matters more than you think
A driveway usually wants about 4 inches of compacted base; a parking area or anything carrying heavy loads wants 6 inches or more. Going an inch shallow to save material is how base fails early.
