Crushed vs. River Drain Rock: Which One for Your Drainage?

Both crushed and river drain rock move water. The real difference is shape, and shape changes how the rock behaves once it is in the ground.

Crushed drain rock

Freshly crushed rock has sharp, angular faces that lock together. That interlock keeps the rock from shifting, holds open voids for water to pass, and resists clogging. It is the workhorse for buried drainage: French drains, footing drains and backfill behind retaining walls. The 3/4" size is the standard for most French drains.

River drain rock

River rock is smooth and rounded, washed clean over time. It drains well too, but the rounded shape does not lock together as tightly. What it offers is looks, so it shines wherever the rock stays visible: dry creek beds, exposed surface drains, borders and water features.

Which should you use?

If the rock will be buried or structural, choose crushed for the interlock. If it will be seen, choose river for the clean finish. Not sure on size? Run it through our Project Planner or call the yard and we will point you to the right one.
