You measure a project in cubic yards but you buy rock by the ton. Knowing how to convert keeps you from ordering the wrong amount.
The rule of thumb
For most aggregate, one cubic yard weighs roughly 1.4 tons. So a 10 cubic yard job is about 14 tons. Sand and lighter material run a little less; wet material runs more.
Why yards come first
You calculate volume from length, width and depth, which gives cubic yards. Then you convert to tons to order and to price by weight.
Let the planner do it
Our Project Planner takes your dimensions and gives you both numbers, plus the right material. Skip the napkin math.
