Estimating Material for a Patio, Start to Finish

A patio is three material layers, and each one has its own number. Figure them together and you order once.

Base rock

Take your square footage and multiply by your base depth in feet. A 4 inch base over 200 square feet is about 2.5 cubic yards, roughly 3.5 tons of Class 2.

Bedding sand

Plan about one inch of leveling sand over the same area. For 200 square feet that is roughly 0.6 cubic yards. It is a thin layer, but skip it and pavers will not sit flat.

Joint sand and a margin

Add joint sand to lock the pavers and a small margin for waste and compaction. When in doubt, run the numbers through our Project Planner or call and we will check them with you.
