The Best Gravel for a Driveway That Lasts

Most gravel driveways fail for one reason: no real base. The pretty top layer is only as good as what is under it.

Build in layers

Start with a compacted Class 2 base, about 4 inches for cars and 6 inches for trucks and equipment. That layer carries the load and drains. The decorative or driving surface goes on top.

Compact, do not just dump

Spread, wet lightly and compact each layer. Loose rock ruts and migrates. Compacted base locks together and stays flat.

Crown it for water

Shape the surface slightly higher in the middle so rain runs off to the sides. Standing water is what tears a driveway apart over a wet winter.
